6 Child Visitation Tips Infographic

When a child resists going to their other parent’s home post-divorce, it can be a difficult situation to navigate. Explaining the rules is a good starting point—help your child understand that following the court-ordered custody schedule is a legal responsibility for both of you. Emphasize that you’re committed to doing what’s right and that changes need both parents’ consent.

Patiently encourage them; resistance is common, especially early on, and these feelings may pass. Try to uncover the reasons behind their reluctance by listening empathetically, allowing them to express frustrations without judgment. Assure them it’s okay to feel the way they do but gently reinforce the importance of keeping a positive connection with their other parent.

Keeping your co-parent in the loop is essential, preferably in writing. Let them know when your child is struggling with visits, but remember, this doesn’t relieve you from getting them to the custody exchange. The child’s age and maturity level may also play a role, as some courts consider a child’s input in custody matters, but this varies by state and remains at the judge’s discretion.
