A photoshopped photograph of 19-year-old Chloë Grace Moretz went viral, resembling a Family Guy character. Publicly mocking her body made the actress withdraw and work on herself. On Twitter, Crazy Rich Asians’ Constance Wu attempted suicide after facing outrage and online bullying. Not only female celebrities. Jonah Hill has constantly requested people not to comment on his body because it’s unhelpful.
To maintain his mental health, he will no longer give press interviews. Naomi Osaka takes breaks and refuses press interviews for her mental health. These are some of the mental health issues celebrities face daily.
Mental Illness Doesn’t Discriminate
Anxiety and despair are equal. Over 50% of individuals will be diagnosed with a mental disease, according to the CDC. The spotlight can make superstars more vulnerable and hinder their mental health recovery. They may notice the issue more than others due to the spotlight. Some reasons their mental health can suffer:
Fame is Fickle
A star can be loved, but one wrong tweet, a family member backing the wrong politician, or a bad movie can ruin their reputation. Even if it’s not their fault, they may wonder if they did it. They may base their self-worth on their celebrity status, affecting their confidence and well-being when it drops.
There’s a Shelf Life
Unless you’re Meryl Streep or Tom Cruise, older actors have few gigs. When younger actors beat them out for roles in their age range, it hurts. Ageism is common in Hollywood, but we’re protected at work. Being undervalued and forced into early retirement would make anyone feel inferior. Celebrities hustle because time is scarce.
Constant Pressure to be Perfect
Photoshop, filters, botox, filler, cosmetic dentistry, airbrushing, and micro blading make self-confidence a problem for everyone. Celebrities must look well. Even outstanding images are Photoshopped to death by magazines. Natalie Portman stated her next Marvel picture was the first to require strength. Like Black Swan, most movies require her to be thin. They don’t comply? Their jobs or prestige are lost, something they cannot afford.
Their Private Life isn’t Private
Blake Lively, pregnant with her fourth child, shared a recent snapshot of her big bump to deter reporters from camping outside her house. Instead of helping Britney Spears, photographers profited from her mental health crises. Celebrities never get a day off to address their health issues. Everything in their lives is for sale to the highest bidder.
Easy Access to Substances
Celebrities use more drugs because of their lifestyle. More pressure to party and club than in other professions. Alcohol and narcotics are freely available to minors. Early exposure, easy access, and mental health difficulties can cause addiction. Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Heath Ledger, Amy Winehouse, and Prince died from accidental overdoses.
Celebrities Aren’t Immune
Celebrities may appear happy but be hurting. More awareness of celebrities with mental illness doesn’t mean they seek care. Robin Williams, Kate Spade, Anthony Bourdain, and Avicii committed suicide recently.
In 2020, 3.2 million considered suicide, 1.2 million attempted it, and 46,000 died, according to the CDC. If you or a loved one is undergoing a mental health crisis or considering suicide, get help immediately.
There Are Alternative Depression Treatments
Celebrities may not take antidepressants because they cause drowsiness, weight gain, and alcohol interactions. Newer, better therapies like transcranial magnetic stimulation or Accelerated TMS address mental illness swiftly without systemic side effects, so work life doesn’t suffer. Talk to your doctor about lifestyle-friendly treatments.
