A spirometry test isn’t required for every CDL medical exam, but if your doctor has concerns about your lung function, they may request one. This non-invasive test measures how well your lungs function and the amount of oxygen you move when you breathe. It’s especially important for commercial drivers, as reduced lung capacity can lead to fatigue, shortness of breath, and drowsiness, making driving unsafe. Drivers with a history of smoking or exposure to lung irritants like diesel exhaust, silica dust, or asbestos may be asked to take the test to assess lung health. To prepare, wear loose clothing, avoid large meals, smoking, alcohol, and strenuous exercise for 24 hours before testing. Certain health conditions like recent surgeries, heart attacks, or collapsed lungs may temporarily disqualify you from taking the test. However, being asked to complete a spirometry test doesn’t automatically disqualify you from obtaining your DOT medical certificate. Many drivers with conditions such as asthma, sleep apnea, or COPD can still be cleared to drive if properly diagnosed and treated. If needed, further testing and medical recommendations will help ensure you are fit for duty while prioritizing road safety.
